Creating business impact is not achieved by delivering new technology. Impact is the result of a business change program. At MerrionIT we recognise that whether that change is large or small it always has the same dimensions - every change program must address management change, operational change, social change and technical change (we use the acronym ‘MOST’ to remember these four dimensions).

Management

This addresses the business drivers for the change and focuses on business measurement. Unless the business defines the desired outcomes and designs an effective means of measuring and monitoring them the project is unlikely to be successful. The management dimension designs the roadmap for the business and provides the tools to navigate.

Operational

This addresses the mechanics of the new business. We focus on the business rules rather than specific processes (although new processes will almost certainly emerge). The goal however is to provide a framework in which there is room for ongoing change and the dynamic development of the new business operation.

Social

This addresses the people aspects of change. This will include end stakeholders of the project. In almost all cases business impact can only result from a change in the behaviour of people. These may be buying behaviours or work practices. The social attributes will address things like usage, communications, education, incentives, career alignment.

Technical

This addresses the successful implementation and operation of technology to support the business change
